Stump grinding & removal
Stump grinding and removal in Bidford-on-Avon
Old stumps ground out below ground level so you can turf, plant or pave. Our tracked grinder fits through a standard garden gate.
Stump Grinding
Get rid of the stump, not just the tree
A stump left in the ground is a trip hazard, a home for honey fungus and a magnet for suckers that keep growing back. It also gets in the way of mowing, fencing, paving and anything you'd rather plant there.
Stump grinding is the quickest, cleanest fix. A grinder with a spinning toothed wheel chews the stump into chippings, usually to 200–300 mm below the surface – deep enough for turf, borders or a new tree. It's far less disruptive than digging the whole root plate out.
Our grinder is tracked and narrow, so it gets through side gates and across lawns without wrecking them. We grind stumps from trees we've felled and from ones that were taken down years ago.

How we work
How stump grinding works
-
1
Quote
Send a photo with something for scale, or book a visit. We price per stump based on diameter and access.
-
2
Prepare
We check for pipes and cables, clear stones and debris from around the stump and put boards down to protect the lawn.
-
3
Grind
The grinder takes the stump down in passes until it's well below ground level. Larger surface roots go too.
-
4
Finish
Grindings are raked back to fill the hole or taken away, and the area is levelled ready for whatever comes next.
Doing it properly
Safety, permissions and waste
Stump grinding throws chippings at speed, so we work behind guards and screens and keep people and pets clear while the machine is running. We also check for buried services before we grind – a cut cable or gas pipe is not something you want under a lawn.
If the original tree was covered by a Tree Preservation Order, the council may require a replacement tree to be planted. We'll let you know and can plant it for you. The grindings are a mix of wood and soil; they make a good mulch once they've rotted down, or we can remove them.
FAQs
Stump grinding questions
Can't find what you need? Give us a call – we're happy to talk it through.
It's priced per stump, based mainly on the diameter at ground level and how easy it is to get the grinder to it. Multiple stumps on one visit work out cheaper.
200–300 mm below ground level as standard, which is plenty for turf, planting and most paving. We can go deeper if you're building on the spot.
Grinding removes the part of the stump that produces new shoots, so regrowth is very unlikely. Species like willow and poplar can occasionally sucker from remaining roots; we'll advise if that's a risk.
Almost always. Our tracked grinder fits through a standard 750 mm gate and can cope with steps and slopes. If access is truly impossible we'll discuss other options at the visit.
Yes, once the grindings have been removed and fresh topsoil added. Leave it a few weeks for the ground to settle. We can plant the new tree for you.
No – grinding removes the stump and the main surface roots. The smaller roots are left to rot naturally, which causes far less disturbance than digging the whole plate out.
