Hedge cutting & maintenance
Hedge cutting and maintenance in Bidford-on-Avon
Sharp, level hedges of any height or length. One-off tidy-ups, hard reductions of overgrown conifers, or a regular programme so it never gets away from you.
Hedge Cutting
Hedges cut straight, cut safely and cleared away
A well-kept hedge frames a garden. An overgrown one steals light, blocks paths and annoys the neighbours. We cut hedges of every type and size – from a knee-high box border to a 10-metre leylandii screen – and we take every trimming away with us.
Height is where most people get stuck. Once a hedge is over head height it needs platforms or climbing kit to cut safely, and the tops are where the mess ends up. We have the equipment and the training to do it properly, with a level top and tidy faces.
If your hedge has got out of hand we can reduce it hard, bring it back to a manageable size and set up a yearly or twice-yearly visit so it stays that way.

When your hedge needs attention
Not sure? Send us a photo and we'll tell you honestly what the tree or hedge needs.
- It's grown over 2 metres and you can no longer reach the top
- It's shading the garden, the patio or a neighbour's windows
- It's spreading over a path, drive or public footpath
- A leylandii or laurel hedge needs bringing back under control
- You want a neat, formal finish for a sale or a special occasion
- You'd rather someone else did it, twice a year, without being asked
How we work
How a hedge job runs
-
1
Quote
Tell us the type, the height and the rough length, or book a visit. We'll give you a fixed price and advise on how hard it can be cut.
-
2
Check
In nesting season we inspect the hedge for active nests before any cutting. If we find one, we'll come back once it's fledged.
-
3
Cut
We cut the sides and top to a line, using platforms or ropes for tall sections, and shape the faces so light reaches the base.
-
4
Clear
Every trimming is raked up and loaded. We sweep paths and patios and leave the garden ready to enjoy.
Doing it properly
Safety, permissions and waste
Nesting birds are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. It's an offence to damage or destroy an active nest, so between March and August we check every hedge carefully before we cut. If there's a nest in use, the work waits.
Hedges rarely need council permission, but a hedge made up of protected trees or a hedge in a conservation area can. Countryside hedgerows over 20 metres long may be covered by the Hedgerow Regulations if you want to remove them completely. We'll flag anything that applies.
Trimmings are chipped and recycled as mulch or compost. If you'd like the chippings for your own borders, just say.
FAQs
Hedge cutting questions
Can't find what you need? Give us a call – we're happy to talk it through.
For most hedges, late summer after the birds have finished nesting, with a light tidy in spring if needed. Conifers should be cut before autumn so the new growth hardens off. Hard reductions are best done in late winter.
Yes, but only after we've checked it for active nests. If we find one we'll pause and return once the young have fledged. Most hedges are fine to trim; we just need to look first.
Sideways, only into green growth – leylandii won't regrow from bare brown wood. In height, as far as you like, as long as there's green growth left on the sides. We'll advise at the visit.
Always, unless you'd like them chipped and left for your borders. We never leave a pile behind.
It depends on the height, length and how much needs taking off. A regular maintenance visit costs less than a one-off overhaul. We'll give you a fixed price after a visit or from photos.
You're entitled to cut back branches that overhang your boundary, up to the line. We'll do this tidily and the trimmings technically belong to your neighbour, so we'll offer them back before removing them.
